Absolute Contraindications:
  • Acute inflammation – caused by bacteria, viruses and poisons are contraindicated. Tissues will be red, hot, and painful with congestion accompanied by fever. Lymphatic drainage will push these substances into the lymph channels before the body has a chance to eliminate them. This way one can spread the toxic substances throughout the body. It is best to wait a few days until the condition is not acute and the body has had a chance to clean up the area.
  • Malignant tumours – there is a fear of spreading the cancer.
  • Thrombosis – can lead to free floating blood clots in the circulatory system.
  • Major heart problems – if the heart is not fully functioning, oedema can be lymphodynamic due to a lack of venous return. Pumping more fluid in the heart it may stress it more than the actual condition.

Relative Indications or Precautions:
  • Kidney problems – check with the physician before treating.
  • Bronchial asthma – this can stimulate the vagus nerve bringing on an attack.
  • Thyroid problems – no treatment around the throat.
  • Medications – fear of increasing the dosage by draining the interstitial spaces.
  • Chemotherapy – fear of increasing the dosage by draining the interstitial spaces.
  • First three months of pregnancy – fear of miscarriage.
  • Removed spleen – recommend shorter session first.
  • Menstruation – MLD can increase the flow.

Occasionally, you may experience reactions when the body its self-healing process and elimination of toxins. These reactions may include:
  • Frequent visit to the toilet
  • Runny nose and/or cough
  • Slight rush as the skin rebalances
  • Perspiration – another way that the body can excrete waste
  • Conditions which have been suppressed may flare up temporarily before they heal
  • Deep sleep or difficulty sleeping and vivid dreams
Those reactions are only temporary and should clear within 24-48 hours. They are positive signals that your body has responded to the treatment and is balancing itself.

What is Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage?

Lymphatic drainage massage, also known as manual lymphatic drainage (MLD), is a type of massage used to reduce swelling caused by fluid buildup. The lymphatic system acts as the body’s sewerage system. Consisting of a network of lymph nodes, ducts and vessels, it carries fluid—which contains proteins, salts, water and white blood cells—throughout the body to the blood. As part of the immune system, lymph nodes help filter out foreign substances (like infections) before that fluid enters the central venous system.
In conditions where the lymphatic system is not working properly, fluid builds up, causing the area to swell. Lymphatic drainage massage moves the fluid to where the lymphatic system is working properly, so the fluid can be removed, and the swelling goes down.

Massage after care advice

To ensure that you gain maximum benefit from a massage treatment, I recommend that you:
  • Loosen tight clothing – this inhibits lymph flow
  • Increase the amount of water you drink over the next few days – the body will be in a state of high toxicity for a few days after the treatment
  • Reduce your caffeine intake (coffee, tea, colas)
  • Avoid alcohol for 24 hours
  • Try to cut down on smoking
  • Make time to rest and relax- this allow the blood pressure to return to normal if has dropped during a treatment (this often happens)
  • Regular (but not too strenuous) exercise helps with muscle contraction, therefore lymph flow
  • Deep diaphragmatic breathing also helps to promote healthy lymph congestion
  • Diet is important; a light diet of row foods id recommended so that the body does not need to concentrate on sluggish digestions. Remember, low sodium diets are recommended for a healthy lymphatic system – poor diets are a contributing factor to poor lymphatic drainage

I'm so glad I tried this place out.  Was looking for a massage in midtown, and when I searched on a Google map there were very few.  I decided to give Yese a try.  Parking was a breeze...nice spacious lot next to her building.  Upon entering Yese's lobby I was instantly calmed.  Very welcoming and intimate.  Yese is awesome.  She spent quite a bit of time asking about myself and what my needs were.  The massage room itself was decorated very nicely and I found it also very calming.  Yese did an awesome job...always making sure I was comfortable.  I broke my neck in a car accident several years ago, and I'm so glad to have found a massage therapist in midtown that I feel totally comfortable with!  Thanks, Yese!! Chris D.
